I was introduced to BeerSmith in May of 2011 and was initially overwhelmed with the plethora of options– equipment and mash profiles, ingredient lists, water calculator, Tinseth vs. Rager, fermentation profiles, etc, etc, etc. Over the years, I’ve developed a decent grasp of many of these functions, which has made designing and making good beer much easier for me, in addition to improving my consistency. These videos are my way of hopefully mitigating some of the intimidation you might experience when first messing around with BeerSmith.
For the first video, I focus on setting up an equipment profile/s, a requirement for those interested in precisely dialing in their numbers. While BeerSmith comes loaded with myriad profiles, most of us have brewing systems that differ in many ways from them, hence the importance of creating a profile for your own brewery. And it is much easier than you might think.
If you’re not currently using BeerSmith, you can use it free for 21 days by downloading it directly from the website (I get no compensation for this), after which you can purchase a registration code. You can also purchase the software on CD from Amazon, which helps to support Brulosophy. Either way, it is a great product for homebrewers!
Corrections & Clarification
– Selecting “Adjust Mash Vol for Deadspace” does not impact sparge volumes, just mash volumes
– When discussing efficiency % around 2 minutes, I say mine is 75% when using “mostly ale,” I meant standard 2-row
– We just moved into our new office and I’m still working on getting my recording equipment setup properly… sound will improve once I do.

If you have any questions after watching the video, please do not hesitate to ask (brulosopher@gmail.com), I’ll try to respond as soon as possible. I will try to record 1-2 tutorials per week until all of the topics I can think of are covered.
