Both are crossover-based pickups — the Maverick shares some of its underpinnings with the Escape, while the Santa Cruz is closely related to the compact Tucson — and both pack four-cylinder.
If you want a small truck, how tiny do you really want to go? Will the 2022 Ford Maverick satisfy your needs, or will the larger 2021 Ford Ranger be a better fit? Let’s see which truck is the better deal.
The 2022 Ford Maverick vs. the 2021 Ford Ranger
First, let’s look at prices. You can get started in the 2022 Ford Maverick for $19,995. The 2021 Ford Ranger begins at about $24,820. You can save almost $5,000 with the Maverick, but the Ranger may come with more standard features.
But let’s talk about space. The Ranger is about 11 inches longer than the Maverick and about three inches taller. However, the Maverick provides more space in the backseat. The Maverick has 110.3 cubic feet of passenger volume compared to 97.6 cubes with the Ranger SuperCrew.
The Ford Ranger has a bed that’s 61 inches long with a height of 20.8 inches. The Maverick’s bed is 54 inches long and 16.5 inches tall. But with the optional tubular bed extender, the Maverick’s bed can reach six feet.
Does the Maverick or Ranger have more power?
The 2022 Ford Maverick comes with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor that generates 191 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque. This hybrid powertrain should get an estimated range of 40 mpg.
But you can only tow up to 2,000 lbs with the hybrid powertrain, and it’s only available in front-wheel drive. For all-wheel drive, upgrade to the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 250 lbs and 277 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, you can tow up to 4,000 lbs.
The 2021 Ford Ranger has a single 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine option. It gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway. The 2.0-liter engine in the Maverick may get 26 mpg combined.
With the Ranger, you can tow up to 7,500 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,128 lbs. The Maverick can carry a payload of up to 1,500 lbs. So, the Ranger is the more robust option for towing and hauling.
The Ford Ranger has a more traditional body-on-frame platform. This allows it to be more capable of off-roading. The Maverick is available with AWD, which can still tackle slippery conditions. As a result, the Maverick may have a smoother and sportier ride.
Does the Ranger or Maverick have better features?
The 2022 Ford Maverick features a plush, modern interior that’s brand new. The 2021 Ford Ranger is starting to show its age with an older interior design. Both trucks offer dual-zone automatic climate control and power front seats.
Both trucks come with a 10-inch touchscreen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. They both have a standard Wi-Fi hotspot too. You can opt for wireless phone charging in the Maverick.
Crossover Mac Mavericks
Standard forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking comes with both trucks. You can add blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The Maverick hasn’t been tested for safety ratings yet.
If you want a comfortable truck, the Maverick will do. It may serve as the nicer daily driver. But for towing and hauling or off-roading, the Ranger takes the cake. We can’t wait to see how the Maverick performs on the road for a better comparison.
